Background:
Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre (https://www.sreedhareeyam.com/hospital/ ) offers ayurvedic treatments for various types of eye ailments, including retinitis pigmentosa, Usher syndrome, cataracts, retinal detachment, etc. (See list of eye ailments treated). Sreedhareeyam was founded in 1931, and its ayurvedic ophthalmology knowledge and practices have been passed on through generations of the Namboothiri family.
As of 2026, there are four members of USH India who have repeatedly returned to Sreedhareeyam for continued treatment for RP and Usher, aimed to maintain and prolong the good health of their eyes and ears.
The main hospital is in Kerala, but they have many clinics throughout India. The main doctors from Kerala visit the clinics regularly.

For New Patients:
I would suggest you contact Sreedhareeyam and they usually suggest an initial online consultation.
In the initial online consultation to determine the course of action (including length of the first visit), they will ask for any recent eye and ear medical reports (such as audiometry test, visual field test, fundus photography, ERG test, OCT test, etc), medical reports for any other medical conditions (eg. diabetes, hypertension), list of medicines currently taken, the current symptoms (eg, problem with depth perception, difficulty seeing in the dark, etc).
When you visit the hospital, always remember to bring all your eye and ear medical records.

Cost Estimate:
Here is the history of the total cost paid by one USH patient for 14-day treatments at the main hospital. The total cost depends on the type of room used (ward, non A/C standard, A/C deluxe, A/C suite, cottage, villa, guest house, etc), treatments done, extra services availed (dietician, yoga, etc), etc. This cost does NOT include food and travel costs.

Dr. Sumesh Soman (research coordinator) is our main research contact at Sreedhareeyam. USH India has expressed the desire to follow and help in any research they want to conduct on Retinitis Pigmentosa and Usher Syndrome. Dr. Soman was suggested by Dr. Sreekala.
