USH FACT 2: Senses Affected by Usher Syndrome

Usher syndrome mainly affects 2 senses - hearing and vision. However, in some USH types, it also affects balance.  The vision loss is due to an eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. 

Usher syndrome does not cause intellectual disability, but the challenges of having both hearing and vision impairments can lead to delays in the development of communication and mental skills. Early detection and intervention are necessary to help children develop skills early in life.
