USH FACT 4: Vision Loss (Part 1)

The vision loss in Usher syndrome is due to an eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa or RP. 

Unlike the hearing loss in Usher which is already present at birth, RP does not start at birth.

The most common first symptom of RP is night blindness. “Night blindness” means having difficulty seeing things clearly in dark places or at night, or the eyes taking longer to adjust to the darkness. 

People with night blindness may find it challenging to walk through a dark room like a movie theatre, or to see the stars at night in a clear sky, or to drive at night.
