New Page: Self-Training Guide to Independent Living with Usher Syndrome
We just added a new webpage in this USH India blog... "Self-Training Guide to Independent Living with Usher Syndrome" (https://ushindia.blogspot.com/p/self-training-guide-to-independent.html).
We have heard/read a lot of advice on how someone with Usher can be trained at home to live as independently as possible. In India, professional training programs -- especially for adults -- may not be easily available; they may be very costly, or the facilities are far-away. So this effort of compiling and documenting advice into a webpage will hopefully help to fill this gap.
This new webpage is far from complete. So please contribute more tips to add to this page by sending email to info.india@usher-syndrome.org.
This page is also listed under the "Resources" tab.

GIST: In 1993, a study on Retinitis Pigmentosa patients concluded that taking vitamin A supplements slowed vision loss. But in 2023, a follow-up study from the same institution concluded that vitamin A supplements are actually HARMFUL for USH2A, while for other types for Usher, vitamin A does NOT help. The 2023 follow-up study analyzed the findings separately by gene, while the 1993 study did not.

USH Bit 6: Smartphone Screen Magnifiers
If you enjoy watching videos, joining video calls, or reading the news on your phone—but struggle because of low vision—a smartphone screen magnifier might make a big difference.
A phone screen magnifier is a physical device that works like a stand with a built-in magnifying lens. When you place your phone behind the lens, everything on the screen—text, images, and videos—appears bigger and easier to see.
Why it helps:
- Makes small text and images look larger
- Reduces eye strain
- Lets you keep the phone farther from your face, reducing exposure to radiation
- Comfortable for watching videos hands-free
Where to get it:
These magnifiers come in many designs from various manufacturers. You can easily find them by searching online.
Cost: Rs200 and up

USH FACT 13: What Causes Usher Syndrome? (Genes Linked to Usher Syndrome)
Usher syndrome is a genetic condition, which means it’s passed down through families. It happens when there are changes ( mutations ) in certain genes that are important for the normal functioning of the inner ear (for hearing and balance) and the retina (for vision).
Researchers have identified several genes linked to different types of Usher syndrome. Each type—USH1, USH2, and USH3—is caused by changes in specific genes. The table below lists these genes and the year they were linked to Usher syndrome.
Confirmed Usher Syndrome Genes (as of 2022)
USH Type 1 genes:
- USH1B: MYO7A (1995)
- USH1C: USH1C (2000)
- USH1D: CDH23 (2001)
- USH1F: PCDH15 (2001)
- USH1G: USH1G (also called SANS) (2003)
USH Type 2 genes:
- USH2A: USH2A (1998)
- USH2C: ADGRV1 (also called GPR98 or VLGR1) (2004)
- USH2D: WHRN (2007)
USH Type 3 gene:
- USH3A: CLRN1 (2001)
Proposed Usher Genes (Under Study)
Some genes, such as HARS1 (linked to the proposed USH3B type), are still being studied. These genes are not yet confirmed because:
- They don’t always cause both hearing loss and retinitis pigmentosa (vision loss), or
- People with these gene changes may show different or additional symptoms not typical of Usher syndrome.
Because these cases are extremely rare, researchers continue to study them to confirm whether these genes truly cause Usher syndrome.

USH FACT 12: What is a Gene Mutation? (Recipe Analogy)
Usher syndrome is a genetic condition, which means it’s caused by changes — called mutations — in certain genes.
When someone is tested for Usher syndrome through genetic testing, the report will list *which USH gene* has the mutation and even the specific exons (parts of the gene) that are affected.
This gene and exon information is important because researchers often use it when developing new *treatments and therapies* for Usher syndrome.
*The Recipe Analogy*
Think of your genes as a giant recipe book for your body.
Each gene is like a recipe that tells your cells how to “cook up” proteins—special molecules that keep everything working.
Some proteins help your eyes process light and maintain healthy peripheral vision, others keep your ears and balance system working properly.
A gene mutation is like a typo or missing step in the recipe.
* A small typo might not change the dish much.
* But if a key step is missing — like forgetting to bake a cake — it can ruin the result.
Inside each recipe, exons are like the important instructions you actually follow, while other notes (called introns) are like side notes you skip when you cook.
If a mutation happens in an exon, it’s like messing up a critical cooking step, so the final protein might not work as it should — leading to symptoms like vision or hearing loss.

USH FACT 11: Other Types of Usher Syndrome
Usher syndrome is a genetic condition, which means it is caused by changes (mutations) in certain genes. So far, researchers have identified 10 known genes that can cause Usher syndrome.
You may also hear about “Atypical Usher Syndrome” and “Ultra-Rare USH Genes.”
Atypical Usher Syndrome refers to cases where someone has a mutation in a known Usher gene but does not show the usual pattern of symptoms. For example, some people with USH2A may have retinitis pigmentosa (RP) without significant hearing loss, or hearing loss without RP.
Ultra-Rare USH Genes are newly discovered or very uncommon genes that might cause Usher syndrome. Researchers are still gathering evidence to confirm if they truly cause the condition.
Scientists continue to identify rare gene changes and unique symptom patterns, which is why ongoing research—and participation from the Usher community—is so important.

USH FACT 10: Usher Syndrome Type 3
There are three main types of Usher syndrome: Type 1 (USH1), Type 2 (USH2), and Type 3 (USH3). Here, let’s focus on USH3.
People with USH3 typically share these core symptoms:
Hearing: Hearing is usually normal at birth. However, hearing loss develops later—often starting in childhood or early teenage years—and tends to get worse over time.
Vision: Night vision problems usually begin during the teenage years, but the severity and timing can vary widely from person to person.
Balance: Unlike USH1, balance problems are not always present from birth. Instead, some people with USH3 may experience balance difficulties later in life.
USH3 has 2 known subtypes: USH3A and USH3B. Overall, USH3 is quite rare, even rarer than USH1 and USH2.
Studies show that USH3 is more common among people of Jewish heritage and those with Finnish heritage. Interestingly, USH3B has also been reported among Indians.
Just like in USH1 and USH2, there is a wide range of experiences within the USH3 group. The age of onset, the speed of hearing and vision loss, and the severity of balance problems can differ greatly from one individual to another, even among people with the same subtype.

USH FACT 9: Usher Syndrome Type 2
There are 3 main types of Usher syndrome – Usher type 1 (USH1), Usher type 2 (USH2) and Usher type 3 (USH3). Here let us look at USH2.
People with USH2 typically share these core symptoms:
Hearing: Moderate to severe hearing loss from birth
Vision: Decreased night vision begins in late childhood or teens
Balance: Balance is usually normal
USH2 has 2 known subtypes: USH2A and USH2C. Among these, USH2A is the most common, not just within USH2 but across all types of Usher syndrome worldwide. Among Indians, both USH2A and USH2C have been reported.
Although all individuals with USH2 share similar core symptoms, the details can be quite different from one person to another. For example:
**Some may have milder hearing loss, while others may experience more severe loss.
**The age when vision problems begin, the severity, and the speed at which they worsen, can also vary widely.
Because the hearing loss in USH2 is usually less severe than in USH1, many people can still hear enough to communicate by speaking and listening — often with the help of hearing aids. Others, who cannot hear clearly and do not use hearing aids, may prefer to communicate using sign language.

USH FACT 8: Usher Syndrome Type 1
There are 3 main types of Usher syndrome – Usher type 1 (USH1), Usher type 2 (USH2) and Usher type 3 (USH3). Here let us look at USH1.
People with USH1 share these core symptoms:
Hearing: Profound (or very severe) hearing loss from birth.
Vision: Decreased night vision before age 10.
Balance: Balance problems from birth.
USH1 has 6 subtypes.
USH1B is the most common form of USH1.
USH1C is not as common. It has been found in people with French Acadian ancestry in Louisiana USA.
USH1D is the second most common form of USH1.
USH1E is very rare.
USH1F is not as common. It has been found in people with Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.
USH1G is not as common.
In India, USH1B, USH1D, and USH1G have been reported.
Because of the early onset of hearing loss, many individuals with USH1 use sign language to communicate; some use cochlear implants and communicate using spoken language. Because of balance issues, children may start walking at an older age compared to other children.
All individuals with USH1 will have similar symptoms regardless of the subtype, but how mild or severe the symptoms can become, when they show up, how quickly they worsen can vary from person to person.

USH FACT 7: Vision Loss (Part 4)
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) does not affect everyone the same way:
Some people notice RP symptoms in childhood, others not until young adulthood or later.
Vision always gets worse over time, but the speed of progression is different for each person. Sometimes progression can be slow and sometimes faster—depending on gene type, environment, etc.
Complete blindness (total darkness) is very rare in RP. Most people with RP keep at least some vision, even in advanced stages of RP.
Everyone with Usher syndrome has RP, but RP can also occur on its own — even in people with no Usher syndrome.
